Its March now, exam season everywhere! May be some of us have forgotten that its the same time when we wrote our board exams. I see anxious students in my locality, all buried deeply in their books. And I see that the parents are more anxious than them !
With the passing of exams, its not the students who are not getting grey hairs , but its the parents who are losing hairs !
Too much of information is a spoiler sometimes, and with almost all parents having information having access to net its always the case. When you see an ad saying virtual coaching classes, everyone having unlimited download internet connection enroll their kids in it. Learning online can help when you are already fluent with the subject, and you are looking for more information. In college its a different story, you get lot of simpler presentations online for the topic which you are looking for, so it will be better to understand through that, than reading the complex foreign author books.
But when in school, be as a school kid. When you ask your kid to google for everything, the habit of skimming is lost, and whenever any information is required the first reference will be then to Google.
Parents of late with too much information from net, movies run behind what the protagonist says. When a kid starts his school, when he actually starts to learn numbers for the first time, they enroll them in Abacus, Vedic Maths, whatever one comes across. When the kid starts to scribble, they enroll them in Painting class, when the kid starts to talk, they enroll the kid in oratory classes, when he starts to read , they enroll the kid in Reading classes.
One thing which they have not done so far is to enroll in Economics class, when the kid starts to learn about money. In work they complain that freshers coming out of college are fully dependent on books, they don't read things apart from books etc, the system is not good , marks are not the judgment criteria etc. and ask for report card back home !
Now when it comes to board exams the issue is even more complex, parents will be speaking in hushed tones, that the neighbor kid who wrote the board exams last year scored only 80 percent, you should do better than that. They complain that the kid does not know what to do in life, I wonder what the parents did when they were facing their board exams, probably studying sitting in an temple or something ! Even now , after earning for a significant amount of time, one does not know where ones life leads to, what will a kid in tenth / twelfth grade know ! Its not a crime, one will learn as he moves on !
And I remember regional channels in TamilNadu , having programs like 'Centum in Maths ' , 'Centum in Physics' etc. , and the first thing they say in that program is 'Stop watching TV' . I would say first change the Television Program system , and then come to Education System.
Am not saying education/exams are not important, one should know to ease the grip, one should know that not everybody will be able to score a centum, but everyone can come up with some positive encouragement and hardwork ! As parents they should teach that to the kid , and not to go and complain to neighbor / teachers that kid is not scoring marks !
Parents should know that not everyone will be excellent in all subjects or even studies, a person good in one thing need not be good for someother thing, they cannot make the kid the perfect allrounder.
You have seen Irfan Pathan,and you wanted him to be as next Kapil Dev, and now you know where he is.
You have seen Manmohan Singh as an economics pundit, you wanted him to lead as PM, and now you know what happened.
You have seen Abdul Kalam as an nuclear scientist, you made him a politician, and you know what happened at the end of his term.
You have seen me writing, and you know what I have become !
You can never complain of the system, when you force the system into someone. give your kid some time, show them the way and not force the route !
And most important of all things, don't allow persons who have taken the board exams already, they will say lot of things, just like all the things I have put down above, it will just add up to the pressure :)

Am not Aamir Khan in 3 Idiots, I am not saying the system is wrong blah blah, I came out of this system, whatever I think is due to this system I learnt , so I dont know whether its right or not ! I am actually confused whats Aamir Khan's take on this, in the movie 'Taare Zamen Par' he told the teachers have problem, then in 3 Idiots, he says the system is wrong, and in next movie probably he will say the ghost of his maths teacher is the problem!
